Our goal is to live in a tiny house. Right now, regardless of what people (you know who you are) think, we have more room than we need. So we are looking at alternatives. We've discussed yurts, trailer homes, semi-trailer homes and Tiny Homes on wheels. Today we're talking about dog houses.
I think dog houses are the best option. You can buy them pre-made and stack them as you need. We can nail boards from the dump to the sides to create a multi-level home. We can have one for me and Dan, one for the boys, one for girls, one as a family space and one as a kitchen. We're not going to waste money on a separate one for a bathroom as we can use the outside in the Maine winter as our bathroom.
Because the space will be compact it will be easy to heat with a candle inside an old coffee can. We can run extension cords through the fields to a Christian neighbor's house for the computer and satellite radio. We can use rubbermaid totes to hold our sleeping bags - in fact, I can make sleeping bags with blankets lined on the outside with grocery bags to keep them dry. Even my crockpot and Wonderwash will fit in a dog house.
Since Daniel doesn't do anything but sleep he won't need much room to stand up and if we teach the others early to crawl everywhere this will be perfect.
What do you think? How low can you go?
I think the crockpot would be sufficient to heat the doghouse. You woul save at least $0.00034 per minute on heat by not using the candle.
