FAQ Fridays: Why We Don't Watch Star Trek By Liz Lemon

Many of you have asked why we don't watch science fiction shows like Star Trek.

Dan used to be a Star Trek fan, but then I showed him that it wasn't Christian. He agreed and we no longer have any Star Trek materials in our home. Why? First of all, it is against our faith. The Bible doesn't mention other galaxies. Jesus came to save people on earth, not people out in space somewhere. This concept is foreign to Christian thought.

Secondly, our boys watch everything that we do. Because our apartment is so small and we have to watch TV huddled around a laptop, our boys are exposed to everything that we watch. As I have mentioned before, the boys want to be just like their dad; they write just like he does. If Dan and I were watching something that was against the Bible, it would confuse our children. We do not believe this is Godly.

Thirdly, Star Trek promotes science above religion. This is one of the problems with science fiction shows in general; they make science a god. We only have one God. This is also why we will be homeschooling our children, as this problem is rampant in public schools. (I will make a separate post about this later.)

Finally, Star Trek promotes ungodly views of women. The women on the series are often placed in leadership roles above the men. This is not the way God intended. Were our boys to watch this show, they would get the wrong message about gender roles.

As you can see, Star Trek is not right for a Christian family.
